The frying pan guide

The right pan size

Determining the correct pan size

When choosing a pan size, it depends on how many people you usually cook for and how large the food being fried is.

If you often eat with the whole family or with several guests, we recommend a pan diameter of 28 cm. This makes it easy to prepare even larger portions. If the diameter is too small, the food may not fit completely, or the pan may be so full that the ingredients do not heat evenly.

Since pans have rims of different thicknesses, the diameter of round pans is measured at the upper inner edge. This also helps ensure that pan lids fit universally.

Pan diameter vs. pan surface

The cooking surface of the pan, also called the pan surface, does not always match the pan diameter: with pans that have a thicker rim or a special shape, the inner surface is often smaller than the pan diameter. The area available to you for frying with a 28 cm frying pan therefore does not necessarily have to be 28 cm.

Make sure that the base of the pan fits the size of your hob to ensure even heat distribution. A pan that is too large for the hob will not heat evenly everywhere. If the cooking surface is smaller than the hob, valuable energy is lost.
